Greetings.

Welcome to Threads, the digital home of Tom Kirkham, attempted author, explorer and musician.

He doesn’t actually live here.

Pop Life is released!

Celebrating the launch of Pop Life: The Story of a Minor Musical Expedition.

“My mental health is a disaster zone – I’m half expecting the UN to rock up in my head in a belated attempt to stabilise the region.”

Depressed and burnt-out, obsessive music fan Tom Kirkham hit rock bottom when his heroes and Bowie suddenly died. The music he’d once taken solace in had become too painful to listen to.

Pop Life is the story of how Kirkham learned to love music and life again via an intensive, year-long trawl through the back rooms and bars, concert halls and stadiums of the live gig circuit, searching for transcendence, or at the very least, an unobscured view.

But Pop Life is also about trying to make sense of a world that seems to be losing its mind, with Trump, Brexit and Terror all symptoms of a global malaise. Is music a solution, a design for life, or is it just a distraction in the darkness?

Pop Life is a book for our anxious, over-stimulated times. Kirkham emerges as a funny and candid - if sometimes irascible - voice as he experiences gigs from major stars to jobbing covers bands and ponders the vagaries of modern life.
